What does this rating assess?

This is an initial qualitative review of business alignment with Catholic values. It covers all 100 business profiles, additional disclosures for 98 and selected detailed findings. No company has undergone a full audit. There is no ‘fully compliant’ category or star rating implying Church certification.

Screen conflict

Evidence documents an activity covered by the selected exclusion. Other benefits do not offset it.

Material concern

A documented issue requires remediation review. A historical finding does not prove an ongoing violation.

Mixed profile

Useful activity comes with particular ethical questions. A risk is not an allegation.

Economic justice. Customer protection, corruption, tax integrity, financial exclusion and responsible ownership.

Care for creation. Emissions, energy, water, waste, biodiversity and impacts on local communities.

How categories are assigned

Documented exclusions X take precedence, followed by findings C. Otherwise the business profile receives M where benefits come with specific ethical questions, or P for an identified useful contribution. An incomplete group perimeter receives NR. These are WMA judgments; P does not establish compliance of all practices.

Benefits do not offset exclusions. Human-rights policies do not automatically establish alignment on life and family. Missing evidence stays unknown. Comparisons show the most cautious state for each area; detail cards retain all findings.

Weapon type, company role, revenue thresholds and group scope matter. Defense, medicines, alcohol and banking are not automatically excluded. Individuals’ religion, origin or identity is not a company-rating criterion.

Catholic basis, exclusions and limitations

USCCB (2021) provides a reference for life, dignity, the common good, justice and creation. Screens include specified involvement in abortion, euthanasia, contraception, pornography, nuclear weapons, tobacco and gambling. Production, distribution and materiality thresholds differ. The bishops’ investment policies are not a universal company-certification system.

Mensuram Bonam (2022) offers a broader reference for responsible investment, discernment and corporate dialogue. WMA’s categories, ordering and interpretations should not be attributed to the authors of these documents.

This edition does not comprehensively review donations, every employee benefit, every product, every legal case or all fund assets. Allegations must be distinguished from official findings and company responses. A published policy may predate the review. Categories should change when new evidence and remediation have been assessed.

This is an ethical research tool, not a buy/sell recommendation, credit rating or return forecast. The universe is inherited from the existing 100-largest developed-market company list; it is not 100 companies per country.
