OpenAI and Anthropic: how much profit would justify their enormous investments?
Information as of 19 October 2026. Author calculations using confirmed funding-round valuations; a scenario, not an earnings forecast.
OpenAI and Anthropic need to turn the artificial intelligence boom into tens of billions of dollars in sustainable annual profits. At their valuations, simply reaching profitability would be only the beginning.
The starting points are confirmed post-money valuations: USD 852 billion for OpenAI on 31 March 2026 and USD 965 billion for Anthropic on 28 May. These are equity values including fresh capital, rather than amounts already spent on infrastructure or current stock-market prices.
How much, and how soon?
Assume an investor requires 10% annually and sells their stake when the company is valued at 25 times annual net profit. We assume no distributions to investors and no dilution. The required annual profit depends on the exit date:
Calculation: profit = valuation × 1.10ⁿ ÷ 25, where n is the number of years from now. Every extra five-year wait raises the hurdle by about 61%. At an assumed 25% net margin, the 2031 figures would require approximately USD 220 billion in annual OpenAI revenue and USD 249 billion for Anthropic.
Investment must translate into cash
The costs are enormous. Reuters, citing the FT, reported that OpenAI projected USD 278 billion in net cash burn during 2026–2030. Reuters also reported at least USD 518 billion in Anthropic commitments for cloud services, computing and infrastructure over a decade. These are different measures: projected cash depletion and future commitments, neither of which should be added to the valuation. Anthropic reportedly already achieved adjusted profitability in Q3 2026; that does not establish sustainable net earnings or free cash flow.
Under these assumptions, annual net profit of around USD 55 billion and USD 62 billion would be needed by 2031. This is a valuation scenario, rather than a full DCF or a payback period for data centres. Actual returns depend on future margins, investment and financing; new share issuance can reduce an existing investor’s share of the upside. Growing user numbers therefore need to deliver cash after the costs of models, infrastructure and continued development.
